Reddit is Quietly Rolling Out a TikTok-like Video Feed Button on iOS | Tech Crunch 💻
"Reddit’s mission is to bring community and belonging to everyone in the world, and subsequently, Reddit’s video team’s mission is to bring community through video".
TAKEAWAY 🔥: Reddit is making short-form video a key feature on the iOS app. The traditionally discussion-based forum is jumping on the short-form video trend to maintain a relevant social network. Users will be able to scroll a TikTok-like feed of directly uploaded videos with options to comment, upvote or downvote, gift an award or share 📲. These swipeable videos will include content from subscribed subreddits, as well as related communities. This isn’t a shocking move as Reddit acquired TikTok rival, Dubsmash, in 2020 and this could be a step towards incorporating Dubsmash’s video tools into its platform in the future.
"The creative options also align with key TikTok dimensions and creative flows, ensuring that your clips feel natural and in line with the rest of the platform - and not too polished and ad-like, which is a key consideration in your TikTok marketing approach."
TAKEAWAY 🔥: Vimeo and Canva have become official TikTok Marketing Partners, combining expertise to make advertising on TikTok easier for small businesses. The video builder tool, Vimeo Create, will provide an easy-to-use process to create clips and enable direct ad production and posting through the TikTok Ad Manager 📱. Vimeo Create also offers custom video templates including graphic and text overlays, transitions, royalty-free music and more. Canva has created a library of over 50 TikTok ad templates, reducing cost and time for brands building campaigns. Canva’s Publish End Points tool enables brands to natively publish aesthetically pleasing content directly to TikTok and naturally engage with their audiences. If you’re looking to find your brand community - and customers, now is the time to tap into these TikTok promotion opportunities ✅.
Local and Anonymous Social Media App Yik Yak is Back | The Verge 📲
"According to the app’s relaunched website, the new incarnation of Yik Yak bought the rights to redevelop the service in February 2021, with the aim of providing a local social media network that’s free from the “labels” that dominate communication on other platforms."
TAKEAWAY 🔥: Yik Yak, the local, anonymous app that was once popular with college students - has returned. The app was shut down four years ago after it gained a reputation for rampant cyber-bullying and subsequently declined in users. The app resurfaced on the iOS App Store this week, sparking conversation 💬. Much like the 2014 version, users can anonymously post and comment on short text posts that are only visible within a five-mile radius. To combat bullying and harassment, the platform has added a new long list of ‘community guardrails’. The platform is only available in the US, however, the company plans to expand into other regions soon. Will this new version of Yik Yak be welcomed or rejected? - only time will tell ⏰.
